1975 Grand Ville Brougham Convertible
“I had been looking for a 1975 Full-size GM Convertible for over a year when I found my '75 Grandville Brougham Convertible at an auto auction in Central Pennsylvania. I went to the auction to bid on a '75 Chevy Caprice which had been restored.
But what I found was a car in deplorable condition. My disappointment about the Chevy turned to joy when my eyes fell on this showroom original Grandville with only 6,400 original miles on it. After failing to sell at the auction for failure to reach the owner's reserve,
I kept after the owner for an entire week until the car was mine.
The car was brought to the auction house by a dealer from Erie, PA who told me that he had known the original owner of the car for many years. He told me that the original owner was the owner of a Pontiac dealership in Erie who ordered the car from the factory.
I can only presume that he knew it was the last year for the full-size convertible and wanted to keep one for posterity. Anyway, the dealer kept the car stored at the dealership for many years, only driving it on rare occasions.
The original owner grew older (I was told he is in his 80's now) and the Pontiac dealership is long since closed. Here in PA, after a certain number of years, title to the car had to be issued from the dealership to a person, so the first registration of the car came in 1988,
into the name of the owner of the dealership. I received that 1988 original title when I bought the car.
I am told the original owner really didn't want to sell it, but I guess reality won out and he finally relented, selling it to the dealer in May of this year (2006), who brought it to the auction house where I found it a few weeks later.
Officially, I am the second owner of the car.
The car is completely original, except for tires, which were replaced for safety reasons. The paint, chrome, interior, carpet, belts, hoses, convertible top, boot, etc. are just as they were when the car was new on the showroom floor.
When I drove it for the first time, everything worked... air conditioning, cruise control, radio, power windows, seats, doorlocks, convertible top. The only non-functioning item was the dashboard clock. The 400 cubic inch, 4 bbl engine is strong, quiet and powerful.
Recently, I received the reproduced factory build-sheet and reproduced window sticker from Pontiac Historic Services. My intentions are to keep the car in original, correct condition for many years to come.”
